From Saumur to Villandry
On this Loire Valley horseback riding tour, we are going on great history of Plantagenets, Richard Lionheart, Alienor of Aquitaine and Jane of Arc…
We ride in wonderfull sceneries : vinyards, forests, rivers Loire, Vienne, Indre, orchards, and finish with a wonderfull trail ride to chateau de Villandry and its famous gardens.
Day 1 : Arrival
Arrival at hotel La Croix Blanche****, hotel de charme in front of Fontevraud Abbey. Briefing, dinner and night in La Croix Blanche
Day 2 : Troglodyte cave & Fontevraud Abbey
AM – 2h00 riding
Departure on horseback toward Loire Valley. We ride through the georgous former troglodyte village of Souzay-Champigny on Loire banks. Lunch in local restaurant in Parnay.
PM – 1h riding
We enjoy a short ride on Loire banks toward Montsoreau where we will stop. We then discover the royal abbey of Fontevraud where Alienor d’Aquitaine used to live. We admire its magnficent achritecture which house the former throne along with Richard Lionheart and Henry II Plantagenet burials.

Day 3 : Chateau of Brézé & Saumur
AM – 2h00 riding
We leave Fontevraud by countryside and vinyards to reach beautiful castle of Brézé. We are welcomed by wine-makers of Saumur-Champigny cellar for the wine tasting of the estate followed by a gourmet picnic.
PM – 1h00 riding
Visit of Brézé and its spectacular troglodyte moat, unique in Europe. This castle belongs to the same De Colbert family since XVIIth, whom former ancestor used to be Louis XIVth’s banker. New departure on borseback by Saumur’s vinyards. End of the ride in front of Saumur castle with its spectacular view on Loire Valley.

Day 4 : Chateau of Saumur & Chinon fortress - Wine tasting
AM – walking tour
We start our day by visiting Saumur castle, set on a rock overlooking the Loire valley, it used to be a perfect fortress. You will travel through history with its beautiful horse-riding staff exhibition. We are then droven to Chinon to enjoy a wine tasting and gourmet picnic in Chinon estate.
PM – 1h30 riding
After the lunch, we go back on saddle to enjoy a ride through Chinonais region : vineyards and countryside. End of the day with a free time in Chinon : its magnificent fortress set on a rock on the Vienne river, sheltered Henry II Plantagenet at the end of his life. This is also where mythical and historical meeting between Jeanne of Arc and Charles VII occurred.
Dinner and night in lovely Chateau du Rivau****
Day 5 : Chateau of Azay-le-Rideau - Vienne river
AM – walking tour
We begin our day by visiting lovely castle of Azay-le-Rideau spanning on river Vienne and its gardens. This castle is a symbol of Renaissance architecture perfectly maintained since Francois 1er era. Lunch in Azay le Rideau.
PM – 2h00 riding
We enjoy a nice ride through Chinon forest, Touraine countryside and typical orchards before returning to Azay village.
Dinner and night in wonderful Chateau de Beauvois****
Day 6: Chateau of Villandry & Gardens
AM – 2h30 riding
Departing from Azay le Rideau from river mouth of Loire and Cher heading to Villandry castle through orchards and Touraine forest before arriving in Villandry. Lunch in front of the castle
PM – walking tour
Last afternoon with the visit of majestic castle of Villandry and its fantastic « à la Française » gardens.
Last dinner and night in Chateau de Beauvois****
Day 7 : Departure
Breakfast in Gizeux or Beauvois followed by your free departure. Transfers (not included) for Saint Pierre des Corps train station or Fontevraud.
